Broken extractor! How big of a problem?

I think I saw a gunsmith video in which an extractor was broken and the 'smith said that wouldn't prevent function.

I just took my A 5 Twenty Gauge apart and sure enough, I have the inner extractor broken (outer appears intact). I want to hunt with this in October. Should I get it replaced first?

*Haven't shot it yet but will before the hunt.

Auto-5s have left and right extractors, so I'm not sure which one you are referring to, but it is usually the left one that breaks. That's good as your gun will probably still function with most brands of ammunition. I have one that would only cycle Federals -- until a friend looked inside and saw that the left extractor was broken. Pretty embarrassing.

I would definitely replace the broken extractor rather than risk ruining my outing. It's easy enough to do, and since yours is a 20 gauge it has all modern parts. MGW has the parts and also a free download of the Field Service Manual.

I'll check with the local gunsmith and also check with this company and Brownells for the right tools for the job. I don't have the right screwdriver tips for an A5.

Both Brownell's and MGW have Browning screwdrivers. If your 'smith is familiar with Auto-5s, fine. Otherwise I've found it's better to do it yourself.
