I owe a 1971 Light A5 and my friend owes a 1958 light A5. . Last year we both went pheasant hunting in South Dakota and we used praire storm ammo. My forearm cracked and my friend buttstock spilt. Here is my question, what fps ammo is to much for our guns. I think we used 1500.
Years ago, we didn't buy ammo by fps, we used either light loads or express loads. Someone told me to never shoot over 1200fps in our older guns. Any help.

what chokes were you using the in the A5? Most people say it is not safe to use anything tighter than a Mod choke in the older A5 barrels.

A5's are prone to buttstock splitting. Matter of fact, it is addressed in the Gun Blue Book, it is so common. For me, the lighter the better. I like to stay with >1250fps and primarily use 7/8oz. shot.
I should not though, that mine aren't light models, just standard Auto 5's.

If you ever seen the Cable Show Gun Nuts...the shotgun guru Phil Borjoulus says to always go with with the lighter loads...why beat yourself up for a few more FPS.
