I manage the Clean Air Act permitting program for the State of Alaska. We have primacy in the State over EPA. Anything new with a stack or that burns fuel comes across my desk (well, my staff actually) for an air permit, basically a license to pollute with all it's attendant limitations. For all of Alaska. It's fun!

Which is why, once again, my day starts with perusing the Federal Register for new "great ideas" on EPA's part and development.

Actually so far as government jobs go, I love it. After rising up from being a minion, I spend 90% of my day "creative problem solving". Applicants wants this, Clean Air Act says that, and State rules say something else. Solve it so the applicant can move forward with the business of doing business all while protecting Clean Air. Some travel all around the greatest State, including weeks on the North Slope in an earlier life. Been fun for almost 20 years and in 4 months I retire.

The rise from minion to boss path gives way better results for everyone with real life experiences. Way better than the University undergraduate installation with a degree but zero practical or real world exposure.

I tried that boss stuff. Just wasn’t for me. I ran 6 helpers at one time and had 32 knuckleheads in the military. No thank you. I’m a one man show now.

I like those arrows, nice job on the fletchings. Never seen target points like that before.

I was in an archery shop this week getting my 40 year-old compound bow checked out. Great shop, guy replaced the string for $26, I was expecting alot more. Had the draw weight reduced from 65# to 53# as its only a 50% let-off. Everything seems to work, so I'll do little practice at the club.

While waiting, poked around the shop. New bows were close to $2k, sights $250, releases $150. Some of these bows are compact, lightweights with close to 90% let-off. Amazing innovations since I was last in an archery shop. Guess I'm still living in the 1980's.

I was doing a little research on my Browning Cobra II recurve. Apparently it was designed by a bowman by the name of Harry Drake. Interesting character who worked for Browning after selling his shop. A very innovative designer of both recurve and compound bows and is credited with shooting an arrow over a mile. Record stood for quite some time.
