First Browning Double Auto

Discussion in 'Browning Double Auto' started by DuncanTheCanuck, Dec 28, 2025.

  1. Hello I got a browning double auto given to me from 1959 steel reciever. I was just curious if this thing had friction rings and how to adjust them. It doesn't recoil that bad but its more than my auto 5. Any advice would be appreciated

  3. It also has a Cutts compensatory on it would that be factory?. Would it also be a twelvette?. Since its a 12 gauge 2 3/4 Model?.

Not with a steel receiver. The Twelvette’s was aluminum. There was also the Twenty Weight which was lighter still.

All DA’s are 12 gauge with 2 3/4” chambers. As for the Cutts, I’d guess the chances that it was installed at the factory are practically nil. I’m surprised that it’s even on there as the Poly Choke was vastly more popular by the time these guns appeared.

I have a DA which I shoot occasionally. When I got it I couldn’t hit worth a damn until I bought a barrel with a Poly on it. That weight at the end worked wonders.

There’s a guy on Shotgunworld called Dbl Auto who’s an expert.

Yes the twelvette came along much later in the piece. I have seen all the variety of cutts style attachments. Mostly the steel body on 26” barrel for skeet. To my knowledge not a factory fit. The gun was designed and marketed around std individual barrels so you could balance up to a liking . The vent rib is by far the rare barrel. The horse shoe target rib is more common of the clay combos.
Yes Rudolph’s suggestion on Dbl Auto is a good one. Doug knows plenty and is an authority on DA”s . He has done few YouTube’s on disassemble process which are vital to watch and understand if your going to tinker or clean out.
Pay close attention to the fitted taper wedge keys that lock in the trigger plate setup. They are LH and RH dedicated and hand fitted so won’t interchange even though same.
The DA was the most expensive gun to manufacture that Browning ever made and contains the most hand fitting and individual uniqueness of them all. Barrels not serial do not automatically fit straight on Precision and tolerances made a super quality product along with Val being long way ahead of his time.
They are the Swiss watch of Autos.

Can't see in image clear enough. However the target rib is pretty obvious has a distinct "U" top face sight plane in it like a piece of channel iron in section. It's still ventilated in side elevation barrel profile length.
Look up some written articles by Randy Wakeman. Think he owns chuckhawks site now.
The guy and his ego are debatable but his article is factual and give you good general background knowledge and history on DAs
