I have a 1966 t bolt 22 rimfire I have refinished the stock with Tru Oil . Is this a safe way to seal the stock protecting the metal from rusting due to the salt wood ? When removing the butt plate screws you can see the effect of the salt wood on the butt plate screws .
Art Isaacson, the renowned Browning gunsmith, says there is no way to adequately seal a salt wood stock. I suspect that you may get away with it if you keep after it. But who wants a gun with cancer?
I purchased a Belgium T-Bolt rifle from a fellow RFC member and he disclosed it was a salt gun. I went to a West Marine store locally and fortunately one of the employees was a gun guy. We talked about the salt gun issue and he recommended a product so I purchased it and sealed the stock where it contacts the metal. So far so good. Watched Art's video and I thought he said difficult to seal a salt gun. I do not have permission to upload the file/photo of the product I used but it is WEST SYSTEM 105 Epoxy Resin along with its hardener WEST SYSTEM 205 Fast HARDENER. The reason I went to West Marine was due to their products dealing with boats. I figured if it was approved for salt water application it might just work.
The west system is good stuff, I would keep a close eye on it. See my answer to the other post for pictures.
Thanks, good to know others have used their products and been satisfied. I felt fortunate to find a "gun guy" in a Marine products store.
