Hi. I recently acquired a 1961 12ga Superposed in an estate sale and I am curious to know what the previous owner may have had done to the gun. This is my first Superposed to own. The Superposed has a set of Browning 12 ga barrels, marked * and **. There is also a skeet/skeet marked 20ga Simmons barrel set with a matching serial number to the gun and 12ga barrel set. The forearm is removable and fits on both barrel sets. My impression is that the shotgun did not come from Browning in this configuration and that the 20ga Simmons barrels and removable forearm may be an aftermarket retrofit. I’d appreciate any information on whether this kind of modification was common, whether it sounds original or a later conversion, and what to look for when verifying originality and safety. Thank you.
There are some Superposed experts on this site. Unfortunately, I’m not one of them. About all I can do is to explain that * means Full and ** means Modified choke. Also, pictures are a must.
It was a common modification and addition of bbl sets performed by Simmons Gun Specialties, Kansas City.
How common was this modification? I am not finding anything for sale in this configuration. Would you have any gunsmith recommendations for barrel fitting in other gauges? Thanks for any help.
