looking at the mechanics of the action i started polishing things inside and greasing them thinking friction may be an issue or burrs from the newly manufactured gun, and it cycled more smoothly but still had failures.

My question concerns an early Browning BL-22 No. 168004

When I pull back the bolt to load the first round the following cartridge comes through as well and jams up the procedure. The rifle cycles O.K. because the bolt is moving very quickly. I feel there is something that should hold the second cartridge back? Would appreciate if someone knows the answer.

My brother-in-law wants to give me a BL-22 or a Marlin 39 A. This Browning has never been shot and he has the box at home. It was my father-in-laws and was purchased in the early 70's. Which gun is considered better (I'm leaning toward the Browning)? Also, the number on the underside is 71(3,8,orB)56693 and this doesn'seem to match the Browning serial number chart I saw. So, I'm thinking maybe its a 1971. ?
