I had some 8/4 walnut laying around so I cut it to avoid the sap wood. Put it on the Mikes Gilbert recoil pad grinding fixture and sanded it so it was close to the right size but left it a little strong. Then I screwed it to one of my cut stocks and sanded it down the rest of the way. Threw some tung oil on it to see how bad it will look with finish on it. Turns out it looks terrible. I will probably grind the the curve for a horn pad and refinish the entire stock. It will be on the gun I hunt with so if it gets scratched I’m not upset.
Nice work Justin, You should give a try with European walnut (Juglans regia). American walnut (Juglans nigra) tends to be chocolate brown and most of the time, it is steamed, while European walnut tends toward the red color.
